Andy Fermo was trained to endure anything. Nothing prepared him for coming home.
Invisible Injuries is a raw, intimate feature documentary that follows the former special forces soldier and his wife Claire as they live with post-traumatic stress disorder: the injury no one can see, and the one too many veterans carry in silence.
Filmed across Australia and the Netherlands, the film sets Andy's story alongside the voices of fellow veterans, families, psychologists and senior military leaders. Together they reveal what service can cost long after the uniform comes off, for the soldier and for everyone who loves them.
It is also a story of purpose. From their own struggle, Andy and Claire built the charity Invisible Injuries to stand beside other veterans and their families. Honest, confronting and ultimately hopeful, this is a film about learning to see the injuries that don't show.
A global story
While Invisible Injuries is told through Australian stories, its message resonates around the world. According to the World Health Organization, around 70% of people will experience a potentially traumatic event in their lifetime, and an estimated 3.9% of the world's population will experience PTSD at some point. The risk is significantly higher for people exposed to war and conflict.
The film brings together voices from Australia and the Netherlands to show that while every experience is unique, the need for understanding, compassion and connection is universal.
